March 2013 - How do you treat the excessive crying of babys?
Dieter Korczak, Christine Kister and Cornelia Krause-Girth have written a report about excessive crying babys. Excessive crying belongs to regulatory problems of babies and small infants. By an early identification of overstrained families and adequate primary care services it is tried to avoid long-term negative consequences for children and their parents. The international studies show that excessive crying can be reduced by a standardized extract of fennel, melissa and camomile or by a fennel seed oil emulsion or by a hydrolised formula or by a temporary strict maternal avoidance of cow’s milk products. Psychotherapeutic studies demonstrate that advice concerning child development, psychotherapeutic intervention and the improvement of communicative skills reduce excessive crying and stabilize the parents. The full report is available for download at

Dieter Korczak presented key results concerning the effectiveness of alcohol prevention programs for youth at the International conference "Local Communities Take Care". The conference took place from 24th to 25th October in Münster/Westfalia. The results of a survey with Federal and State ministries, Federal offices, addiction centers and municipalities showed that the existing prevention activities for the reduction of risky alcohol consumption are not evidence based. He stated therefore that the effectiveness and efficiency of alcohol prevention activities always should be proved before introduction.

August 2012 - Alcohol prevention rarely evaluated
Risky alcohol consumption and misuse of children and young adults is a severe problem for society and health policy in Germany. Around 40 million Euro are annually spent for the prevention of risky alcohol consumption and misuse by public authorities and private engagement. Yet, the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the measurements, projects and programs against risky alcohol consumption and misuse is rarely evaluated. This is the key result of a HTA report by the GP Forschungsgruppe. Prevention research and planning therefore needs a new approach in Germany. The HTA report is costfree available.
August 2012 - Rehabilitation is helpful for persons with light and moderate dementia
According to Article 40 of Volume V of the German Social Insurance Code geriatric rehabilitation is an obligatory benefit offered by the statutory health insurance. Nevertheless, patients with dementia in in- and outpatient medical care are often seen as so severely physically and cognitively impaired that they do not receive specific (follow-up)rehabilitation treatments. The new HTA report of the GP Forschungsgruppe recommends a different procedure. Rehabilitation treatments (ergo-, physiotherapy, strengthening of cognitive skill) are effective among patients with dementia. Therefore the principle “rehabilitation has precedence over nursing care” should be consistently and comprehensively implemented among patients with dementia. The HTA report is costfree available.
July 2012 - Therapy of the Burnout-Syndrome
There are several therapies with unclear evidence for the treatment of burnout in existence. The research group of Dieter Korczak has therefore studied the evidence for the efficacy of burnout therapies. The report is based on a systematic review of 314 international studies. Only for cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) exists an adequate number of studies which prove its efficacy Generally, the efficacy of therapies for the treatment of the burnout syndrome is insufficient investigated. The report can be downloaded.
June 2012 - Therapy of the burnout-syndrome
The efficacy of therapies for the treatment of the burnout syndrome is insufficient investigated. This is the central result of the DIMDI HTA-report No. 120 which is presented by Korczak, Schneider & Wastian in June 2012. Only for cognitive behavioral therapy exists an adequate number of studies which prove its efficacy. Neither the diagnostic nor the therapy of the burnout syndrome are optimal. Therefore it is doubtful whether burnout patients receive an adequate treatment. Burnout syndromes are a major health problem taking into consideration the 1,8 million working days lost due to burnout. The study can be downloaded.

January 2012 - Migrants in Germany
Germany has always been an immigration country, however without an immigration policy and for a long time without a sensible or effective approach of an integration policy. The starting conditions of the individual migration groups are different as well as their expectations. It is important to focus on their heterogeneity when discussing the integration of migration groups. An article by Dieter Korczak in the European magazine for household economics describes the substantial differences of Polish and Turkish migrants. (D. July 2009 - Contributions of environmental policy and ecological modernization to the improvement of quality of life
The results of a project are now available which deals with the further development of the concept of Ecological Justice (EJ) and its communication possibilities. For this purpose, a delphi-survey and a conference were conducted. Ecological Justice is understood as an integrative concept which includes intra-generational and distributive justice as well as inter-generational justice and the fair utilisation of resources. For the realisation of the EJ-concept the search for synergies between social and environmental policy as well as the development of a new wealth model are recommended. A communication strategy will be successful if it considers the following factors as important: political agenda, initiative, courageousness and persuasiveness of the relevant actors, transferability and diversification potential of the project idea and the composition of a network (Download PDF).
July 2009 - High willingness to spent money
The Timesensor edition no. 15/June 2009 showed that two third of the German population do not have any sign of the so-called "German Angst". Consumption will not drop. For the second half of the year cost increases are expected. But for most of the consumers it will be difficult to reduce their costs immediately. There will be a time lag of three to six months to adapt to the new financial situation. More results are available by
June 2009 - The public handling of private debts
Justice and private debts are not an important subject of public concern. The financial turmoil and the economic crisis overshadow the long-time known over-indebtedness of private households. But the financial meltdown and private over-indebtedness have astonishing similarities, with one decisive distinction: the over-indebtedness of banks is home-made, the one of private households is due to external factors. May 2009 - Over-indebtedness and Data Collection – An European overview
The news of the year 2009 is frightening. The insecure credit debts of European and North-American banks add up already 2.7 trillion euros. And the worse is yet to come. Taxation, unemployment and over-indebtedness will increase. Providing access to high quality money and debt advice services is a key element in the European fight against over-indebtedness. Dieter Korczak (guest editor) has invited ten European scientists and consumer advocates to describe the situation of over-indebtedness and its prevention in Europe. The short reports are collected and published in ‘Money Matters No.7’. Recommendations cover the subsidization of money and debt advice, free debt regulation in all EU member states, the implementation of national task forces and over-indebtedness monitoring. Money Matters No.7 can be downloaded here. Prints can be ordered by

About 2% of the population are members of political parties in Germany. This minority leads the country. Though 71% of the population does not feel represented by the parliamentarians, more than 80% want to vote in the coming Federal elections. Further information on the political culture in Germany can be found in the edition no. 13 of the Timesensor.
February 2009 - Income and expenditure situation of German Households
There is a lot of fear concerning an upcoming financial and economic crisis in Germany. But who really knows how much money an average household spends on a monthly base? The results are published in our Timesensor, edition no.12 and now available. Phone +49-89-54344960 or mail
February 2009 - Second Bavarian Social Report published
The Second Bavarian Social report is now available. Within a team of project partners, the GP Forschungsgruppe was responsible for the analysis of over-indebtedness, children, youth and health. Low job levels often have a higher environmental load, low education level often causes a risky life style. In sum, the life expectancy gets reduced by these factors. The report can be downloaded

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Environment and the Federal Environment Agency. For more information see project letter.
